Growing ConditionsWith extremely low winter and spring rainfall, most growers commenced irrigation in August 2012 to make up for the shortfall, in an attempt to give the vines the best possible start to the season. Continued dry conditions throughout the rest of the season resulted in low disease pressure, small berries and low yields. The resultant wines were very concentrated with lots of colour and tannin.

The influence of the German migrants that settled the Eden Valley is seen today in a rich and diverse culture enjoyed by a myriad of family wineries whose names proudly proclaim their heritage. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was an innovator who liked to think big, really big, and was not afraid to risk it all. The 2012 Zeppelin Big Bertha Shiraz is surprisingly light on its feet for such a big wine, a showcase of powerful, inky berry flavours with impressive length. The wine is a simple formula done well ~ low yielding vineyards, traditional ‘hands off’ winemaking, open fermenters and basket pressing before bottling with minimal fining and filtration.
