AromaCitrus, and lifted stone fruit aromas drives the nose of the wine with delicate savoury aromas of dried herbs, malt, shortbread, and oyster shell from wild fermentation and maturation on yeast lees in large format French oak barrels.
PalateA benchmark Chardonnay from Margaret River. Tight citrus / lime flavours with honeydew melon and white peach driving through the palate to a very long flavoursome finish. Delicate savoury characters of dried herbs, fresh toast and malt from wild barrel fermentation on solids adds intriguing flavour and textural complexity.
Growing ConditionsThe 2013 vintage in Margaret River was the 7th consecutive vintage the region has experienced that has been rated excellent to exceptional ? a testament to the suitability of the region to the growing of world class table wines. The spring of 2012 saw intermittent rain events in September / October / November punctuated by long, cool sunny spells ? ideal for encouraging healthy, even vine growth. A brief storm in late November reduced crops in some of our more open vineyards as it coincided with flowering. This reduced yields in an already low yielding year which really concentrated the flavours of what ripened on the vine. A warm period was then experienced over Christmas / New Year which pulled up vine growth and was then followed by a 19mm rain event in early January from the tail end of a cyclone that came down from northern Western Australia. This was well timed for our dry grown vineyard Blocks and especially ideal timing for our white varieties to retain freshness and vitality in the canopies in the lead up to ripening. Immediately following this, the region experienced perfect "traditional" Margaret River weather throughout January / February / March - sunny, warm days (28-32C) with strong, moderating afternoon sea breezes, very cool nights (cooled off immediately following sunset) and crisp morning dews - all conducive conditions for excellent ripening.
Vinification/MaturationOur Redbrook Chardonnay Vineyards have consistently produced our benchmark Chardonnay for many years. At perfect ripeness, the fruit was selectively handpicked at dawn. The fruit was gently squeezed and continuously tasted to ensure only juice of the finest quality was used in the final blend. This first juice ?fraction? equated to less than 500L per tonne. All juice went directly from the press into new French oak puncheons to undergo wild fermentation on solids, imparting textural and aromatic complexity to the wine. Once blended, the wine was stabilised and filtered only once prior to bottling and extended bottle maturation prior to release. This minimal handling has helped to express our unique, delicate Redbrook house style that will develop great complexity over time.

Light yellow colour, the bouquet showing nectarine with a touch of malt. Some tropical notes. It's quite oaky. The palate is lean and narrow, taut and youthful, but not very generous or nuanced. It's a pristine, fruit-driven and crisply high-acid style without much complexity at this stage. Green apple acidity. I suspect it will age well, and build more character with time. It's worth cellaring a while.

Seamless and refined. This is a far more elegant display than is the norm for this label. It's bright and complex with plenty of grapefruit, citrus, pear and apple flavour, a splash of tinned tropical fruits blooming on the finish. Oak and fruit sit hand-in-glove and the lengthy, refreshing trail of fruit flavour extending out through the finish is impressive.

Shows a backing off from a very obvious style, resulting in an elegant wine that still delivers what you expect from Margaret River. Savoury and minerally, with edgy grapefruit.
