|Palate||Classically light to medium bodied, this is an exquisite wine of fragrance and red fruit purity. Though focused and intense, the palate has a lacy, almost filigree texture, resulting in a graceful wine of seemingly effortless charm.|
|Growing Conditions||After a dry winter and spring, light rains in December were a welcome relief to the vineyard. The warm dry flowering period lessened average crop levels, allowing the fruit to ripen slightly earlier than normal. The resulting crop was excellent, intense in flavour and aromatics and showing the depth of flavour and tannin required.|
|Vinification/Maturation||The fruit utilised for this wine came from the famed Block 4 off Rosehill, planted by Maurice O?Shea in 1946. The fruit was carefully handpicked and sorted in the field, before delivery to Mount Pleasant early in the morning. The grapes were carefully handled, with 20% whole bunches added to the de-stemmed fruit and sent to tank for a three day cold soaking period. Fermentation took place post this, with a combination of pump overs and plunging to achieve the perfect level of tannin extraction for this style of wine. After fermentation, the wine was pressed off skins to tank, and racked to wood where MLF took place. No more than 30% new French Oak was used, to enhance the structure of the wine and provide complexity, but still allow the unique Rosehill vineyard aromatics to shine through.|

Charles King planted the Old Hill, but O'Shea recognised the same red volcanic soil on Rosehill; the impact of this wine is immediate and striking, its medium-bodied palate full of juicy red and black fruits which demand to be swallowed, not ejected. The 1880 Vines Old Hill is a cerebral wine, Rosehill goes straight to the heart.
From a parcel of Rosehill Vineyard that dates back to 1946. Elaborate retro-packaging includes a micro-printed tale of Mount Pleasant and legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea and Rosehill; the font is as lacy as the wine is. It’s a solid look for a wine of prestige from Mount Pleasant. Anyway, the vineyard speaks for itself, so to speak. Lacy is a word to be repeated here. Texture is satiny and very delicate, fine tat-work with a firmness and a tenderness at once. Bruised red fruits with a lemony tang of acidity bringing the wine to chalky, lengthy close. Oak back seat and barely-there cedar in character. Sits so evenly in the palate, very elegant, almost flat in the mouth and a coiled expression that feels very youthful and fresh, yet needing time to unravel. Fine architecture in this wine, succulence to savour. Pretty impressive; better soon or with time open.
Mount Pleasant’s Rosehill vineyard in Broke Road, Pokolbin, opposite Lake’s Folly, was also planted by Maurice O’Shea in 1946 after buying the land in 1945. This 2013 medium-bodied red has 13.5 per cent alcohol and ruby red hues in the glass. Cassis scents display on the nose and satin smooth plum flavour glides onto the front of the palate. The middle palate introduces blackcurrant, spearmint and dark chocolate fruit characters married to restrained vanillin oak and the finish has dusty tannins. The Rosehill shiraz grapes are grown in rich, red volcanic loam soil and the wines are only produced in vintages of high quality.
By the light of a gas lantern, the first vintage of Mount Pleasant was created. It was 1921 and Maurice O’Shea wasn’t afforded the luxury of electricity. Equipped only with the basic tools of a petrol driven crusher, hand pumps, an old basket press, blocks of ice and a concrete tank, O’Shea brought Mount Pleasant to life. It was a firm belief in regional definition, single vineyard wines and a thorough understanding of the Hunter Valley landscape the late Maurice O’Shea planted the famed ‘Rosehill’ vineyard in 1946. The block is home to a unique, yet truly regional expression of Shiraz, and is only made in exceptional years. Classically light to medium bodied, “1946 vines” is an exquisite wine of fragrance & red fruit purity.
