|Colour||Youthful crimson red.|
|Aroma||Vibrant red cherry & violet notes.|
|Palate||Juicy red fruits dominate the fleshy entry, giving great freshness and supple almost Pinot-like mid palate. But the finish is savoury with silky tannins making it a smashingly great medium bodied drink that demands food.|
|Growing Conditions||This parcel of Touriga Nacional is an old vine block on the Hanwood Estate surrounding our 100 year old winery, Farm 130 Block 13. Since 2013, portions of this block have been made into a dry table wine. Touriga Nacional is a Portuguese variety grown for their famous Port fortified wines of the Douro Valley. |
2016 was a great vintage with excellent winter rainfall coupled with a warm & dry growing and harvest season. Yields were low delivering small berries of intense fruit flavours and mature tannins.
|Vinification/Maturation||Machine harvested in the cool of the morning to retain the gentle aromatics of the variety. Carefully de-stemmed into an open top fermenter and cold-soaked for 3 days at 10°C. The parcel was allowed naturally warm before inoculated with selected yeast. During ferment the wine was plunged only, up to three times daily, and after a period of 8 days was pressed off, allowed to settle then rack to old French puncheons. Old oak was selected to allow a gentle softening through the time in barrel on light lees but without the influence of new oak aromatics or tannin to cloud the purity of the fruit. Matured in barrel for 15 months with minimal rackings occurring during this period. |
Target style is a vibrant supple red wine showing great purity of fruit with fine savoury tannins that will pair fantastically with most cuisines.
